Girls’ powderpuff is an annual tradition at BSM as a part of homecoming week festivities. In the afternoon, the school gathers together in the stadium to support the girls as they come together in hopes of winning the powderpuff championship. This tradition brings our school spirit to the next level and lets the girls show off their flag football skills.
Many students enjoy that this activity shows off school spirit, and brings the school together in an exciting way. The coaches and players collaborate together to win the powderpuff championship and this game brings a sense of community and bonding as a grade and as a school. The excitement of roles being reversed and watching your classmates play in a fast-paced game ensures that everyone will have a good time, while also getting the school spirit up for homecoming week. “I think it brings the school spirit up because people can unite together to create a team and we all can win together,” sophomore Aida Parker said.
This year’s powderpuff game was filled with thrilling plays and different highlights. The junior blue team went into overtime and beat the red team. They worked together by passing the ball and communicating with each other cohesively. The blue team’s strategy was to come into the game with a positive mindset knowing they have no football experience. They worked together and used each other’s different strengths in sports to help them succeed in many ways, leading them to victory while making long-lasting memories together. “We didn’t practice or do anything before the game, but we just came into it with a positive mindset and we saw each other’s strengths,” junior Jun Vang said.
Student’s top favorite moments this year were playing with all of their friends and hearing the coaches coach them. The coaches instructed the players with words of encouragement as many of them have little to no experience in football. Another aspect of the game is seeing the players dressed up in their outfits while representing their team’s colors. Students tend to dress up head to toe in their colors, showing their pride in their team. Coordinating outfits that are over the top with your teammates can be an amusing way to show school spirit. “Overall dressing up in school spirit is my favorite part, because it’s fun to look forward to,” junior Sophia Black said.
