As we are quickly approaching the finale of 2024 fashion, our student body votes on popular global fall fashion trends and the ones we will likely see in our BSM hallways as we exit 2024.
Starting with the basics, wide-leg jeans, puffer vests, brown Uggs, and textured knitwear received a substantial amount of approval and are sure to be seen this fall on the majority of students: 81.3% of students supported Uggs, 93% knit sweaters, and 82.5% wide leg jeans. “[Uggs will dominate fall clothing] because the weather’s changing. Brown is a color of fall, so it just kind of matches everything…[My favorite fall clothing item is] probably sweaters. I really like sweaters. [I get the most use out of] wide leg blue jeans. I think they’re the most flattering. They go well with a lot of tops,” sophomore Mary Waters said.
Despite past popularity, our student body has voted and is evenly split between saying goodbye and re-wearing puffer vests this coming year. Waters is confident that puffer vests will remain a staple. “I think puffer vests will come back in style. They were really popular last year, and they’re nice for, like, not the super cold days, but not hot days,” Waters said.
Mazlow Moquist, owner of every shoe style to name, gives our student body insight into the “fall shoe game.” “For fall [shoes], I would say Uggs …[Not] Ugg slippers. I like Ugg boots more…But in general, I would say Adidas,” Moquist said.
The majority of the student body has voted against other fall trends such as trench coats, suit and sweater vests, brown Adidas shoes, and, surprisingly, leopard print. Leopard print, considered “the new neutral” according to Good Morning America, is “cementing its status as a perennial fave that never truly goes out of style.” Whether it’s a bag, pant, skirt, shoe, or shirt, leopard print is dominating fall fashion worldwide. Controversially, our BSM student body doesn’t approve of the trend; only 34% of students favor leopard print.
Taking a different approach, some of our students believe many fall accessories can easily elevate a basic outfit and deserve a little more hype than they currently have. “[I] really like [wearing] ballet flats. I feel like they just add a little bit of fanciness to an outfit, but still comfortable and cute…Plaid scarves, kind of colorful, for a pop of color. I think they add such a flare to an outfit like you could have the most basic outfit but then add a super cute scarf,” Waters said.
Additionally, senior Lori Weltzin hopes to see more dresses this fall in our BSM hallways. “I think dresses are underhyped. They’re so easy to wear, they’re flowy, and you can put them on and it’s one piece of clothing. No one wears them, and they’re casual, and there are fancy ones; I love [that they are] versatile,” Weltzin said.
For more unique fall fashion, Moquist advocates against 76.5% of our student body opinions, who vote maxi skirts out of style. “No one wears skirts in the fall, but I think that’s so cute,” Moquist said.
Whether sticking to wide-leg jeans, Uggs, and knit sweaters or defying our school’s fall norms with leopard print, maxi skirts, ballet flats, and scarves, our student body is sure to embrace 2024 fashion with a bang.
