One of Colleen Hoover’s most popular books, “It Ends With Us”, was recently made into a movie and hit theaters in August. This film covers hard topics but has had many mixed reviews from fans. Although this book-to-movie adaptation has been long awaited by many readers, it has disappointed some audiences.
The movie started out strong with a scene just like most of us imagined from the beginning of the book. As the movie went on, the outfits of the main character, Lily Bloom, were less than fashionable. Most saw Lily Bloom as the “clean-girl aesthetic,” but that was not portrayed in the movie. I saw her as more of a trashy 30-year-old, even though she was in her early 20s in the book. This is nothing against Blake Lively; I just don’t feel she was the right actress for the role. On the other hand, the character Ryle had the correct style that fit the description in the novel. He was very clean and was realistic about what a neurosurgeon would wear. Atlas was also pretty accurate in the more “rustic” style most of the book readers imagined.
However, some of the key details were missing from the movie that were included in the book. Without spoiling the entire plot, one of the bigger parts that they missed was the whole part of Finding Nemo and young Lily being obsessed with Ellen DeGeneres. I feel that taking this out took away the naivety of Lily when she was young. I feel that what they missed is what made the book flow and make sense overall. I understand that it is hard to get all of the little parts from a book onto the screen, but these are some fan-favorite events.
Despite this, I can’t rip on the movie the entire review: there are some parts of the film that I enjoyed. The music was great. Getting Taylor Swift’s song “my tears ricochet” was one of my favorite moments of the entire thing. It had me crying as soon as the first chord was played. The overall storyline was pretty good, sticking close to the main themes in the book. The movie was realistic in some moments, but I think that overall, it could have been better.
