From writing college essays, to filling out applications, seniors at BSM have been busy preparing for college. Preparing for college can be time consuming and stressful for students. Yet most students think putting the time in now is worth it in the long run.
There are lots of ways students have been preparing for college. Most students are working on writing their college essays and applications, striving to make their essays unique to their personality so they stand out as an applicant. BSM school counselors play a big role in college preparation helping navigate students through this process. Counselors are open to spending countless hours meeting with seniors to help them perfect their essays and applications. They also help students find the perfect schools to apply to that fit their wants and needs. “I’ve had a lot of meetings with my counselor to discuss things that I need to get done,” senior Raquel Lynch said.
As exciting as it is, preparing for college can come with loads of stress. There tends to be pressure on students to get into their dream college, which prompts worry about a perfect GPA, test scores, and their applications. Due to managing all of this, students can face trouble dealing with their stress levels. With all that goes into the application process, students are encouraged to keep everything organized in a way that works best for them. Some students recommend making a spreadsheet to help keep track of deadlines. They noticed procrastinating their essays only leads them to experiencing more anxiety, so they suggest getting them done in a timely manner. That way, they don’t have to worry about it all semester. “Keep working on it because if I let it sit there, then I stress myself out even more,” senior Lauren Carlson said.
Many students throughout their time at BSM join extracurricular activities and clubs to help their chances of getting into their dream college. They noticed that having a leadership role in any extracurricular activities can make them stand out as an applicant. Especially being a senior, most students strive to pursue a captainship position on their sports teams to show colleges their leadership traits. Seniors think that this helps colleges see what they have to offer as a student in and outside of the classroom. “I’ve joined many more clubs, but I’ve taken on more leadership positions. I’m the president of girl up, and I’m a peer ministry Captain this year too,” Lynch said.
Senior year is notorious for bringing both fun and stress to the table. However, BSM being a college preparatory school strives to guide students in the right direction, making their college application process as seamless as possible.
