As summer is right around the corner, students are in search of summer jobs.

As the school year wraps up, the search for summer jobs is on the minds of many students—some seniors at Benilde-St. Margaret’s have had summer jobs in the past or was searching for a new one and finally found the one.

Senior Delaney Chapman works at Lifetime in Edina and The Amazing Lash Studio in Edina. She also nannies as her backup job in the summer. Finding a job through family or friends can be easy. Some online websites or sources can help you also like applying through Indeed or even the Lifetime website like Chapman. “Time management, organization, availability, and willingness to work,” Chapman said.

The most important part of getting a job is a resume. Resumes need to be clean and concise as well as truthful because many companies will look into your past. You must add any extra activities and past job experiences so they know you’ve had some working experience. If you have any rewards you have received for sports for example leadership because if you have they will think you are a great aspect of the team and lead the company to success. Networking in securing a summer job is great because it will help you get even more jobs. “It’s very important because it’s a way to get out there,” Chapman said.

There are some mistakes to also avoid during the application process. Not responding on time or not filling out the application fully can impact companies decision to hire you. You can also put it on college applications too which might give you a better opportunity at getting into the college you want. “It can give you something to do and is always a good experience for future jobs,” Chapman said.

Senior Weston Quirk found a job at Ben and Jerry’s in Wayzata this summer. He has been working there for a while and loves everything. Quirk was on a search for a summer job all of last year. Quirk lives in Wayzata and always thought it would be cool to work there. He walked into Ben and Jerry’s and asked for an application to work there. “He wanted to work there by walking in and asking for a resume. [It] gave me more of a chance to get the job,” Quirk said.

The best skills to have for a job are availability and teamwork. If everyone is on the same page and people get frustrated with each other. It will create a toxic environment for everyone. An effective way to make any resume stand out is just putting as many details as you can on the resume. “Adding experience and activities that could relate to the job or how dedicated you are,” Quirk said.

It helps you later on in life and gets you more connected to people who are in your career or who have been down the same path.”

Benefitting from a job can help you with money but it can also help you will college. Colleges look for that experience and see if you’re a hard worker or someone they think would be successful at their school. “It helps you later on in life and gets you more connected to people who are in your career or who have been down the same path,” Quirk said.
