Benilde-St. Margaret’s students are preparing for spring sports which are just around the corner. Many teams are wrapping up their off-season training and beginning to transition into the regular season. Weightlifting and agility training have been popular ways sports teams have been preparing. Athletes have participated in various preseason activities and training sessions with their teams in preparation for the spring.
After finishing off last year’s season strong winning the state championship, the girls’ lacrosse team is working hard in their offseason and looking forward to a competitive spring season. The team has been playing in a winter league competing against other metro schools to prepare for the regular season beginning on April 1st. By playing in a winter league, players will be familiar with each other’s playing styles. These preseason practices are preparing athletes for a successful and injury-free season. The team has also incorporated strength workouts. “We have workouts Monday and Wednesday and we do a few tournaments throughout the winter as well as a league in the fall and winter,” senior Maggie Graczyk said.
BSM athletes have also been doing their own training in preparation for the spring sports season. Many students do this to improve their individual skills to overall benefit their team. Many athletes design their own workouts to focus on improving their weaknesses and building confidence for the upcoming season. BSM students are working hard to be ready for their season. “I have watched a lot of videos to try and improve my serve, and I have been working on getting my feet faster and having faster reflexes,” senior boys volleyball player Steven Sibri Pina said.
Many spring sports teams have been kick-starting their seasons with some team bonding activities as well. This helps players get to know each other and feel more connected. Learning to trust and support your teammates before the season starts makes it easier during the season to rely on your team for support. Teams have participated in team bonding activities such as volunteering, open gym, weightlifting, and team get-togethers. “So far we have had a couple of team bonding opportunities and they have been volunteering, but later in the season I’m sure we will have many more,” Graczyk said.
