Every year, BSM gym teacher and creator of the Intramural Basketball Association Mike Johnston comes out with IBA power rankings. These rank each team from best to worst, and Johnston writes a report about each team. He constructs the rankings and reports by watching games and looking at the numbers of wins, losses, and points for and against each individual team. Johnston also looks at the teams with players that are playing really well and ones that are playing badly.
Some students disagreed with the power rankings. They were very disappointed and they thought that they were very inaccurate. Senior Zius Hunter is the coach of the 2020 MonteVerde who is ranked eighth in the league. “I believe that the IBA power rankings are sloppy and all over the place and that whoever made them needs to reevaluate,” Hunter said.
On the other hand, senior Jack Puncochar, a player on the Street Shooters (ranked #7), feels that the IBA power rankings are pretty good, but they could be a little better. He gives recommendations to make it better by adding head-to-head matchups and different styles of rankings. Many people have different opinions about who is the best player in the IBA. “I would have to take Johnston as the best player in the league because of that laser of a three,” Puncochar said.
The captain of the Super Gremlins, senior Slater Crandall, is a fan of the rankings. Many think this is solely because his team is ranked #1. They have the best point differential in the conference and the best record. “Well, obviously I’m a fan of it. I played for the Super Gremlins and we’re ranked number one. I think the rankings [are] built off logic,” Crandall said.
Scooby Snacks came off of a winless season last year however they have now won two games this year. They like the power rankings, but they believe they could be moved higher in the rankings, based on their improvement. “Being in the bottom of the barrel last year, it feels good to be at the #5 spot this year. I feel like the rankings were pretty solid. There were a few that could have switched spots but overall good rankings this year,” senior Michael McDonald says.
