With Christmas approaching, the holiday spirit has begun to kick in. Many people are planning family activities, but the continued lack of snow on the ground has been putting a wrench in the outdoor festivities. People have begun to worry that we’ll have a green Christmas, meaning no snow. The debate has begun on whether a white or green Christmas is better.
White Christmas time is all about spending time with family— the more activities the better. People love getting outside with family and friends, whether it’s sledding, building snowmen, or even having a snowball fight. People plan for these types of things all year and count on them being an option. However, the issue is that none of these activities can be accomplished with no snow on the ground.
Snow allows people to get into the Christmas spirit more easily. Most holiday movies, whether they’re Hallmark or classic family favorites, have set the expectation that snow is a part of Christmas. If there isn’t any snow on the ground while the holidays come around this year, it just won’t feel quite like Christmas. I think a white Christmas would help spread the holiday cheer.
Another outdoor activity that’s big in the winter around Christmas is hockey. Without any snow or lakes freezing, the opportunity to play pond hockey with friends and family will no longer be an option. For the majority of kids living in Minnesota, pond hockey originally got them into the sport. Without it, there might be a decrease in the amount of players joining the sport. Not to mention Minnesota is “the state of hockey” and pond hockey has become a big part of family traditions around this time of year.
I view Christmas as a winter wonderland. People imagine Christmas as the time of the year when their loved ones come together to celebrate, where everyone is happy and joyous about spending time with their loved ones. Families have prepared by searching for the perfect tree and decorating it to their desires. Everyone spends weeks buying thoughtful gifts they think the other person will love. It’s a time when magic is in the air and everyone can believe.
When families wake up on Christmas morning, I think there’s no better feeling than looking outside and seeing snow everywhere. It puts the cherry on top of the holiday spirit. Christmas is such a magical time, and snow just makes it that much better. I believe that a white Christmas is better than a green one because of all the activities and holiday spirit that come with it.
