On November 4th, the day of the OG Fortnite update, the game saw about 44.7 million players

The Fortnite comeback for Benilde-St. Margaret’s students has been growing extremely fast, but why? On November 3rd, Fortnite brought back “OG Fortnite.” This update reignited everything that made the game so popular in the first place.

Fortnite hasn’t seen this type of attention since 2018 with the amount of players online at an all-time high. The reason for this high attention and popularity within the game is the recent update that was just launched. The update includes all of the features that were in the game in 2018. The Fortnite map now has original locations like Tilted Towers, OG Loot Lake, Lazy Links, Salty Springs, and many more. Old weapons and old playing styles have also returned. As the game progressed through updates many playing styles have lost their simplicity and become much more complicated. This drove many players to stop playing the game.

BSM senior Andrew Brazil is back in the game after many years off. Brazil first started playing in early 2018 with all of his friends. He enjoyed the simplicity yet slight challenge of the game and the ability to be able to play with all of his friends at the same time. As Fortnite started to add more and continue to update the game, Brazil started to fade away from it, resulting in him stopping playing after COVID in 2020. However, this recent update has brought Brazil back. “I think what they’re doing now is good, bringing back all the old stuff that made the game so fun in the first place. It’s bringing back so many memories [of] being able to play with all my friends and play on the OG map,” Brazil said.

Senior Kieffer Koby is also back on the Fortnite wave. Like many others, Koby originally started playing Fortnite when the game was at its peak popularity. When the game started to fade away from its original form, Koby stopped playing. Much like Brazil, the OG update led Koby back to the game. The simplicity of the game and the opportunity to talk with friends is what drove Koby back. “My favorite part is dropping Tilted Towers with the boys, getting as many eliminations as possible, and trying to get the dub. Getting those wins and having an awesome time talking with the boys is just a really good time,” Koby said.

Because of the recent OG update, Fortnite players past and present are once again back on the grind. Currently, it is the most popular game, but who knows how long that will last.
