Letter to the Editor: BSM STUDENTS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON

Starbucks is one of the most preferred places to hang out for American teens, according to a recent national survey conducted in September 2023 titled “Taking Stock with Teens.” In the study, over 9,000 teens were surveyed about their spending patterns, and Starbucks came out as the second most popular place to eat and drink for teens. I recently interviewed 30 BSM students and asked them about their experience at Starbucks. I found the average BSM student goes to Starbucks 2 times per week, spending $19 each week. The range was from $5 to a high of $80 per week.

Why do teens like going to Starbucks? BSM students tell me Starbucks is easygoing, comfortable, and a fun social environment. Sophomore Emma Rudowsky says, “She loves Starbucks!” Students like the option of the drive-through or sitting inside with friends. It’s easy to order any type of hot or cold drink in a variety of flavors. Freshman Katie Driver adds, “I like the atmosphere because it’s comfortable with a homey feeling.” This time of year is especially exciting because the holiday drinks are available for only a limited time. Sylvia White, a sophomore, tells me her holiday favorites are “peppermint mocha and gingerbread chai.”

I like Starbucks too, especially the strawberry acai. However, since it is the Christmas season, how about we all try going to Starbucks one less time a week and donate that money to a charity that helps feed hungry people? We could have a bigger impact than you might think. Over a billion people live on $1.25/day or $8.75/week, according to the nonprofit Opportunity International, which focuses on ending poverty. In the U.S., 41 million Americans, or one in every six children, don’t know where they will get their next meal, based on findings from United Way and the Catholic Connect Foundation.

Just think of how much of a difference we can make by still enjoying Starbucks but also helping people in need if we go without one Starbucks trip a week this December!
