On Saturday, December 9th, sophomores, juniors, and seniors will have the opportunity to attend the Holiday Ball, BSM’s winter formal. Every year the dance has a unique theme that provides students the opportunity to coordinate outfits and accessories. This year’s theme is “Christmas Luau”. I think this theme is creative but doesn’t quite go with the season.
When I think of winter I think of cold weather, snow, Christmas trees, snowmen, etc. During this season, tropical things aren’t on my mind, so I don’t think this theme is right for the Holiday Ball. I’ve personally never been to a holiday ball before and when I pictured it, I always thought of more of a wintery setting. Although “Christmas Luau” doesn’t exactly live up to my expectations, I am still very excited to attend this year’s holiday ball.
This theme makes it tough to coordinate outfits, which is already a very challenging task for many students, including myself. Living in Minnesota, temperatures have already dropped to between 10-20 degrees. When trying to coordinate an outfit to go with a luau theme, it is hard to find options. Long-sleeve dresses are usually the most popular for Holiday Ball due to the cold weather, and it is very hard to find weather-appropriate dresses that match up with this year’s theme. There are some positive things about this theme though, regarding outfits. Many students, including myself, love getting dressed up and then adding fun accessories. A fun accessory I hope to see at Holiday Ball is the vibrant, floral, Hawaiian Leis.
However, this theme does provide a unique change that may attract more students. I love summer and vacation, probably my two favorite things that I look forward to the most. This theme reminds me, and many others, of warm weather and vacation, which brings up lots of happy memories. This theme provides the opportunity for students to step away from the cold weather and to enjoy “pretending” they are in a tropical place for the night.
Another positive aspect of this year’s theme is the location of the Holiday Ball. The Beach Club in Minneapolis matches perfectly with the theme. I already know that the decorations and the setup of the Holiday Ball are going to be great and become the perfect background for many students’ photos. Overall, I think the theme is a good opportunity for students to step outside of their comfort zones, it just doesn’t quite align with the upcoming winter season.
