Taylor Swift is the most popular artist at the moment. She has been re-recording her old albums, trying to take back the ownership of her own music. All the previous re-records, Fearless (Taylor’s Version), Red (Taylor’s Version), and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), were a huge success. Swift is now halfway done with her re-records with the release of 1989 (Taylor’s Version). The Swifties are always eager to hear the new, never heard before “vault tracks” wondering if their new favorite song has been hidden all of these years.
1989 is one of Swift’s most popular albums producing a number of mega hits such as “Blank Space”, “Bad Blood”, “Wildest Dreams”, “Style”, and “Shake It Off”. It is no surprise that 1989 (Taylor’s Version) has been long-awaited, and the addition of the “vault tracks” makes fans even more excited. Overall the album lives up to the high standards that the Swifties have for Swift’s music. She had the occasional change in note or word in her old songs, which made them even better than before. It is the perfect upbeat album, and listening to it brings back nostalgic memories of when I was younger.
“Sl*t”– This song is not what I expected; I was prepared for an upbeat song that had a “girl power” feel to it. It turns out that it is a love song about going out with your partner and not caring what everyone else is saying about you because you are with the person you love.
Say Don’t Go– Personally, my favorite vault track is “Say Don’t Go.” It is everything I expected and more. It is very catchy, I was singing along with the chorus after only one listen. The lyrics are so tragic and sad like in the chorus when Swift sings “Why’d you have to lead me on? Why’d you have to twist the knife? Walk away and leave me bleedin’, bleedin’?”, but Swift puts them to an upbeat tune and the contrast works very well together. The song is just asking for the person you love to say they don’t want you to leave, longing for them to want you again.
Now That We Don’t Talk– Swift talks about the struggles, but also the benefits of not talking to your ex in this song. It is more of a mellow song, with calmer beats to it compared to some of the other vault tracks. I feel that this song is relatable to most teenagers who have been in a relationship, and it is put to the perfect tune.
Suburban Legends– This song talks about how star-crossed lovers make it out of their small town and have huge successes, but they try to stay together through it all. This song in particular reminds me of her Midnights album which was released in 2022. It sounds pecifically the song Mastermind because of the background music and beats.
Is It Over Now?– Swifties have speculated that this song is about Harry Styles, one of Swift’s past boyfriends. It dives a little deeper into why they broke up, and the messiness of the relationship that wasn’t spoken about in the album previously. Like the song Say Don’t Go it is also very catchy and has a good beat to it.
