As a college preparatory school, BSM is dedicated to helping all students succeed. When applying to college, grades can become one of the most important factors. High school can be very stressful, and many students have trouble keeping up with grades. BSM has now introduced a new policy where every Monday, homeroom teachers will check in with students about their grades.
During these homeroom check-ins, teachers are supposed to have students pull up PowerSchool so they can go over grades, missing assignments, test scores, etc. Not only does this benefit students, but it also helps teachers. Showing students their missing assignments helps teachers with their workload because most of the time teachers are constantly sending students emails reminding them to complete their missing assignments. “It’s good to get in that ritual of looking at your grades, paying attention to what you should be doing every week, and prioritizing and organizing yourself,” guidance and college counselor Amanda Anderson said.
Having teachers check up on students can make students feel more comfortable and more supported. Many students can be forgetful with their grades and having a weekly reminder will help many keep working hard and keep their grades up, benefiting many students. This new habit of having a teacher review your grades with you at the beginning of the weekend can help students have a productive week. “[Checking my grades with my homeroom teacher] helps me get through the week and set my week off to a good start,” freshman Bailey Monette said.
BSM students have bright futures ahead of them in college and future jobs. One of BSM’s many goals is teaching students good habits they should carry with them throughout the rest of their lives. A very important habit is staying on top of work. Another important habit to get used to is checking your email. Many students forget to constantly check their email which creates problems for teachers and could create future problems for students. “[Checking emails] is one of those habits that unfortunately we have to do in every job. You’re gonna have to know how to keep up with communication with people. One thing too is that we are going beyond checking your grades, just like getting into good habits,” Anderson said.
