This year, Benilde-St. Margaret’s has held numerous home football games. And I, along with many other members of the community, enjoy attending them. I love hanging out with my friends and watching the game, even if I don’t know much about football. One of my favorite things about football games is the dress-up themes. I always like getting all dressed up in the theme and seeing the student section go full out. But this year, some of the themes have been a bit dull. And like many other students, I think some of the themes are getting a little old.
The dress-up themes give students the opportunity to dress up to support our team through what they’re wearing. Many of the themes in the past have been really fun, like Hawaiian, neon, and pajamas. Some of the students enjoyed the home game themes this year, which were USA and blackout. Personally, I liked the USA theme because it gave students the freedom to wear red, white, blue, or a combination of all three. I enjoy the themes that give students a chance to wear more of a theme rather than just a color, like a blackout.
Junior Alex Luke, who has been attending BSM for five years, thinks the same. She loves attending football games but hasn’t liked the themes this year. She also believes that some of the themes are boring. “I kinda like Hawaiian or just some of the different ones. I’m getting sick and bored of the colors like blackout and whiteout,” Luke said
Along with Alex, sophomore Abbie Kagel wasn’t a fan of the themes either. “I don’t like the dress-up themes [this year] because I feel like we do the same ones so often, and I wish there was just more of a mix-up,” Kagel said.
Though some of the themes are boring, some are necessary, like the BSM theme, which makes it easy for students to find clothes that fit the theme, since it’s just school colors. Another theme is pink out, for breast cancer awareness. However, other than that, I think there is still an opportunity for the themes to be more creative.
Overall, I love attending football games and really enjoy dressing up. Though football games are very fun opportunities for students to be supportive and show off our school spirit, I still think the dress-up themes could be more creative.
