Over the past couple weeks, dating rumors have been circulating around Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. The rumors were confirmed two weeks ago, when Swift attended Kelce’s game against the Bears. While many “Swifties” are excited that Swift is now involved in a new industry, many football fans are frustrated that games are now focused on Swift instead of the game being played.
Senior Sophia Parish has been a superfan of Swift since she was eight years old. She loves her talent for songwriting and what she stands for as a person. While Parish has been a fan of football in the past, she now finds herself watching it even more now that it involves her favorite artist. “I think it’s really fun to see Taylor out and about like a normal person [just] having fun with her friends when she’s at these games. [It’s like] she’s not like some celebrity, she’s just more like an average person,” Parish said.
Junior Kate Jaeger also watches more football now that Swift appears more on television. “I [think] that [because] she goes to the games, it has brought up a lot of views [for] the football games, especially in the females,” Jaeger said.
A lot of “Swifties” like watching Chiefs games due to the fact that they show Swift reacting and celebrating to plays. “I do think as the relationship goes on that people will continue to keep watching, especially to see her reactions. They keep showing more and more snippets of Taylor Swift at the games and I think it’s really interesting for fans to watch because they want to be able to see it live,” Jaeger said.
While Swift has brought many new fans to the NFL, a lot of people have been fans of the league for a while. Many previous NFL fans are upset about the fact that football games are now centered around Swift instead of the game that is happening. “I think it is the stupidest thing ever. I hate the fact that every single time the Chiefs play and every time Travis does anything, they show Taylor Swift,” junior David Birch said.
Birch feels that the NFL has focused more on Swift attending the games instead of what is happening on the field. “They’ve taken away the sport. Any time the Chiefs play, I’m just not gonna watch it. I don’t want to see Taylor Swift around football. It’s just awful. I hate it and I don’t want to see it anymore,” Birch said.
Parish disagrees with what Birch believes and thinks that Swift’s attendance shouldn’t bother anyone. “I don’t think [she is taking over the NFL.] I think that real football fans would be at the games for football. If she’s happy, then who cares?” Parish said.
