Homecoming at Benilde-St. Margaret’s is one of the biggest events of the year. As the week comes to a close, the excitement and activities have been full tilt all week. Last year, Homecoming had a lot of changes with its activities, including a powerpuff/volleyball game, freshman mixer, and the football game time. This year a lot of those changes still stand; however, most students are still excited about the week.
This year’s Homecoming theme is “Glow in the Knight.” The student council worked hard the first few weeks of school to come up with the theme. Sophomore student council representative Mazlow Moquist had to brainstorm ideas, along with the rest of the student council. “We kind of all just said ideas and the President helped pick out which ones were the best,” Moquist said.
Each day during Homecoming week, students dress up to a different theme picked by the student council. The themes this year are: Neon/Glow Day, Barb-enhimer, Jersey Day, Dress your Best, and Spirit day. Sophomore Harper Stevenson-Shimek looked forward to Jersey Day the most. She likes seeing everyone else in different jerseys, and participating. “I think the most participation will definitely happen on that day, and I’m pretty sure everyone in the school has a jersey,” Stevenson-Shimek said.
Similar to last year, boys volleyball and girls powderpuff took place during the day, instead of the night. The powderpuff and volleyball games are great ways to bring students closer together; it also helps set the tone for the week. One change is the teams were by grade again, but seniors played juniors, and sophomores played freshman. “Last year was kind of weird playing with all the grades, where this year we’re actually playing with our grade, which I think will be better because everyone will know more people,” Stevenson-Shimek said.
This year the football team will face off against The SMB Wolfpack (St. Paul Academy, Minnehaha Academy, and Blake) at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday the 30th. The football game is a highlight of the week for most students. Every year at the football game the theme is spirit, and the stands are filled with red. Although the football game used to be at night, a lot of students still look forward to it. Junior Lucas Wurst’s favorite activity of the week is the football game. “My favorite is the football game because it’s the game everyone goes to, and I like going with my friends,” Wurst said.
The week ends with the traditional Homecoming dance on Saturday night. Again this year freshmen will have their dance on Friday night, while 10th-12th graders will have their dance on Saturday. This year at the dance, there will be more activities to entertain students. “We have planned glow in the dark mini golf, food trucks including Kona ice, and a photobooth,” Moquist said.
