Olivia Olson and her teammates celebrated after the game where Olson broke the program’s point record.

It is no secret that Junior Olivia Olson, has had major success when it comes to her basketball career. From making the USA U16 basketball team, to scoring 1000 points, and recently committing to University of Michigan. On January 20, she added another achievement to the list. She now holds the BSM’s Girls’ Basketball point record.

The point record had not been broken since 2005 so Olson felt very honored when she finally was able to break it. “I’m really excited but also I was really nervous before the game because I wanted to get it, but I also knew it was just like any other game so I tried to stay calm,” Olson said.

Olson’s teammates were all expecting her to reach this achievement during their game. “Everyone was counting down the points she had left. It was like, ‘okay, now she has five points to go, now she has two points.’ So that was really exciting and you could just tell we were all just anticipating it,” sophomore teammate Kate Kapsner said.

Once Olson scored the point that broke the record, her teammates immediately started celebrating with her. “Someone had made a sign on the bench. So they brought that out and then everyone started screaming and got on their feet and started crowding around her. It was really fun to experience,” Kapsner said.

Junior Ava Black was able to attend the game to support her friend. “It was really exciting to see how enthusiastic her teammates were. They were all extremely supportive of her and were very excited for her big accomplishment,” Black said.

While Olson is proud of this accomplishment, when compared to her previous achievement of reaching 1000 points last season she feels like it is less climactic. “When I got 1000 points, it was better because it was what I’ve been waiting for. It was a really cool feeling when I hit 1000. In this [game], I felt like it was just kind of like any other game that I just hit another number,” Olson said.

Despite this high personal achievement, Olson continues to recognize all the people who helped her get to the position she is in today. “I’m honored but I want to thank my teammates and coaches who have gotten me in the position to become the leading scorer. Without all of their assists, plays and dedication, it wouldn’t have been possible,” Olson said.
