BSM’s boys’ lacrosse team discusses game strategies in a team huddle.

Following the BSM boys’ lacrosse team winning the state championship in 2021, they have high hopes yet again this year to maintain the prominence of the program.

The BSM boys’ lacrosse program has had a high winning percentage in the past few years finishing with two state championships (2018, 2021) and a state runner-up in 2019. The 2020 season was unfortunately canceled due to COVID-19. They possess four D1 commits, (Cameron Gelling, Justin Dalum, Carsen Brandt, and Caio Stephens) and three D3 commits, (Sam Pikul, George Mobraten, Brad Little). Senior Mitchell Dokman talked about what they have been working on in practice. “We’ve been polishing our skills and have been figuring out who plays the best role for each position on the field, and trying to play better as a team,” Dokman said.

The boys’ lacrosse team played four games this season and has handled business in every single one so far. The team is 4-0, as the first two games ended in blowouts as they beat Bloomington Kennedy 16-1, and Elk River/Zimmerman 17-2. The third was 6-3 against Bloomington Jefferson, and the most recent being a 17-4 blowout against rival Edina. These are not unusual wins for the boys lacrosse team as they won eight out of their 18 games last season by ten or more goals including the state championship game against Prior Lake that BSM won 18-8. Senior captain Cameron Gelling was a part of the championship squad last year, and has high hopes to return to that stage. “Our main goal this year is to win back to back state championships. If we all come together and play together as a team. I see us winning… I would say our biggest competition right now is Chanhassen, but there’s definitely other teams up there like Lakeville North and Sillwater,” Gelling said.

The amount of state championship appearances in the last few seasons combined with the amount of talent on this team isn’t something that people should take for granted. Senior faceoff specialist Luca Platt had something to say about this. “Well we haven’t had any home games just yet but when we start having home games we expect to have many fans to come and cheer us on, so if you aren’t doing anything pop out to the game,” Platt said.
