Spanish Class Performs the Stations of the Cross
On Tuesday, April 13th, and Wednesday, April 14th, BSM’s AP Spanish Literature class performed a Spanish rendition of the stations of the cross to mark the beginning of Holy Week.
Señora Mary Murray’s AP Spanish Literature class performed the stations of the cross twice: once on Tuesday during first hour, and once on Wednesday during second hour. Anyone who wanted to watch was invited, and many Spanish and religion classes were in attendance. The performance was held in BSM’s Hamburge Theater, complete with choir students singing Lenten songs.
The class started preparing a few weeks before their big debut. Readers received their scripts and got to practice them outside of and during class, and actors were able to go to the theater to prepare. About a week before, the class took to the stage to gather all the props and ensure they were ready to go. “We practiced doing the lights, and then there’s like people doing the sounds so we just did a few practices [of that],” junior Natalie Rein said.
The actors in the show had to stand behind a white sheet that was lit from behind so only their shadows were seen. Their silhouettes were used to give an eerie effect to add to the solemn time of Lent. Behind the screen, all the actors had to be conscious of how they were portraying their actions. “It was kind of weird because like we didn’t talk, we just kind of stood there and like, made sure our shadows or our silhouette was shown,” soldier Alex Salmon said.
Three of Señora Murray’s students who are also in choir kicked off the performance by singing a handful of Lenten songs. Juniors Bianca Mojica, Miguel Nunez-Mudoy, and senior Thomas Herbert practiced their songs a few days after school with choir teacher Ryan Werdon. One unique circumstance, though, is that they were singing in the dark, because the theater lights were completely off. “[Singing in the dark] was kind of weird. Thomas just held his phone up for the flashlight. And I had my phone with the pitch pipe and the page numbers that we needed, so we could read the notes and everything,” Mojica said.
Overall, the performances were very successful and proved to be a strong continuation of BSM traditions. “It was fun getting to work with all my classmates and was really fun just to like, interpret the Stations of the Cross during this Holy Week,” junior Leslie Godinez said.
