Newly appointed student council advisors, Mrs. Miksch and Mr. Johnston.

In the post online school year, the student council has switched its leadership, previously led by Ms. Kuzma Olson and Ms. O’Keefe. The new advisers are now religion teacher, Kaitlyn Miksch and gym teacher, Mike Johnston.

The student council was advised by vice-principals Cami Dahlstrom and Matt Weingartz at the beginning of the year. Because the vice-principals have a lot of other responsibilities, they decided to seek out more help. The process to be chosen as the new student council advisers was mostly based on interest from Mrs. Miksch and Mr. Johnston. After a few rounds of informing those interested of what being a student council adviser would entail, the two candidates left were Miksch and Johnston. “I had a really positive experience with the Student Council when I was in high school. And I loved the idea of helping students have more voice in the school, have more responsibility in the school,” said Miksch.

Based on the Covid school year, both Miksch and Johnston felt as though there was a disconnect between the administration and the student body. So, their main priority this year is to help bridge this gap. “I loved the idea of helping students have more voice in the school, have more responsibility in the school, and hopefully gain great leadership skills and put on great events for their peers,” said Miksch.

The student council is responsible for all sorts of activities around BSM. Notably, they plan the homecoming dance and the Holiday Ball winter formal, which is coming up on December 11th. There is a lot that goes into planning these events that people may not realize; students rely heavily on their advisors for a lot of guidance. The new advisors have been working hard to adjust quickly to the fast paced student council environment and are doing as much as they can to guide the students. “Trying to be the buffer between the students has been a fun learning experience,” said Johnston.

The new advisors have been working hard to create an inclusive and fun holiday ball for all students this year. With various issues involving homecoming week this year, the student council and new advisors have learned from their mistakes and the winter dance should be much more put together this year. The new leaders were not appointed until after homecoming week was over, so they are looking forward to the new things coming up. “I coach a lot of stuff, but doing something outside of coaching seemed more exciting to me, now I’ll get to know many more students,” said Johnston.
