Mr. Michael Becker, deservedly, wins head volleyball coach of the year for class 6AAA!

Girls’ Varsity volleyball coach Michael Becker has brought home a big award to BSM: head volleyball coach of the year for the 6AA class.

This past volleyball season has been one of the more successful seasons in BSM volleyball history, and not just in terms of overall record. Starting off with an overwhelmingly high number of losses, BSM volleyball pulled through, thanks to persistence, and ended the season with more wins than losses. “We started the season playing some really tough competition and a lot of teams would have settled for mediocrity after starting with a record of 2-6, but this group knew they had the potential to do something special,” Becker said.

This year’s group of girls has embodied characteristics that prior groups haven’t, such as strong cohesion, great senior leadership, and being motivated by the goal of having fun through working hard. “In my nine years of coaching volleyball here at BSM, I think this team was one of the most cohesive. Everyone wanted to see us succeed, and all of our players were willing to put in the work to make that happen,” Becker said.

One of the most notable reasons why winning this award was meaningful for Becker is the fact that it was only his second season as BSM’s head volleyball coach. Though, Becker explains that this award could not have been achieved without the help of his assistant coaches. “I was so honored to be recognized by this award, though I feel it should be a “Coaching Staff of the Year” award. My assistants Ashley Bushman and Molly Hurrle have put in just as much work and dedication to this program, and both having competed at the highest level, they know so much about the sport and are phenomenal coaches. There’s such a sense of trust among our coaching staff, and we’re all on the same page with our vision for this program,” Becker said.

Winning this award is an impactful, and unexpected, way to close out a very memorable volleyball season. This year’s team dynamic has truly resembled the best of the BSM volleyball program, and Becker looks forward to this continuation in the future. “My favorite part about coaching this past season was getting to come to practice every day with a group of coaches and players that I really love being with. Sports are always so much bigger than just the game itself. If you get to work with or play with people who have the same goals and values as you, it makes it that much sweeter! We have such a great thing going with BSM Volleyball right now, and people want to be a part of it. I’m so excited for the future of our program,” Becker said.
