Is the new adaptation of Dune worth your time?
The 2021 adaptation of Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve, has been a long-awaited film that was set to hit theaters last year in 2020. Due to the pandemic, the premiere had to be delayed. I was very upset but it was all worth it in the end. I hate to say I was mainly excited for this movie due to the star, Timothée Chalamet, but that was the primary reason I wanted to go.
Dune is your classic hero story. An angsty young boy whose parents don’t trust him and who wants to defy what his parents are saying. And of course, after breaking his parents’ trust, gets to do what he wants. Everything ends up turning out okay and he gets to live how he wishes. A classic story.
Honestly, I was pretty nervous to see Dune because sci-fi might be one of my least favorite movie genres and I really only wanted to see it because of Chalamet and Zendaya. I’m a huge Timothée Chalamet fan and this was going to be the first Timothée movie that I would be seeing in the theater. I was beyond excited to support him in this way. I then realized that this movie will mainly be watched by middle-aged men who are fans of sci-fi and I got really nervous and honestly felt bad that I was only seeing the movie for one of my celebrity crushes.
Dune honestly surprised me. I liked it a lot more than I expected myself to. I probably should have read the book before I saw it. It was very confusing and reminded me a lot of Star Wars, and Star Wars is one of those series where you have to know the background in order to understand and appreciate the movie. I discovered myself confused for a lot of the movie but that’s not necessarily the movie’s fault, more of my fault. Most people thought Dune was just another Star Wars movie and I honestly would not have been surprised if someone told me that. With all of the odd planet names and not-so-normal last names, it really seemed like it could fit in a Star Wars trilogy.
The movie was very predictable. It was easy to tell who was going to die and when they were going to. I expect that if you enjoy sci-fi movies, then you would enjoy this. But if you’re like me and only went for some of the actors, then maybe save it and just watch the clips your favorite members are in. I didn’t hate it but I did fall asleep in the middle of it. If you’re strongly inclined to watch it, go ahead, but save the trip to the theater if you’re a little hesitant.
