After teaching music in the junior high, Ms. Chmielewski joins the senior high music department.

Emily Chmielewski (Music)

This year, BSM has a new music teacher. Mrs. Chmielewski — also known as Mrs. C — is teaching choir along with orchestra. Mrs. Chmielewski taught middle school at BSM, and this year she continues her love for teaching in the senior high.

Chmielewski appreciates the positive aspects of BSM; one example being the prayers before and after announcements. “The ‘love our neighbor without distinction’, I have never heard that before coming here and that’s one of the tenets of the school…I think that’s such a great message,” Chmielewski said.

Chmielewski grew up surrounded by music, and continued to pursue it through her life. “I took piano lessons when I was four, and played instruments through middle school and high school. In high school, we had a really strong choir program so I joined choir as a freshman, and totally fell in love with it,” Chmielewski said.

Chmielewski attended Saint Olaf College, and she didn’t always know what career she would choose. “I started as an instrumental education major, and halfway through I switched to choral ed, but I still took all of my instrumental ed classes because I thought they were cool and important,” Chmielewski said.

Being fresh out of college, Chmielewski hopes to implement new, modernized versions of different aspects of the music department. “I also hope to just bring a fun creative spin to the pieces that we do, because there’s a lot of great music out there that’s worth exploring,” Chmielewski said.
