The 2021 Met Gala was not exactly what I expected. After the 2020 Met Gala was canceled due to COVID-19, I was expecting an extravagant night on the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but it was a letdown, to say the least.

The second Monday of September tends to be one of my favorite nights of the year solely because of the Met Gala. With the theme this year of “American Independence,” I was a little skeptical of how celebrities would dress. This year there were some good looks and some not so good looks. I think the expectations were still set high from 2019’s theme, Camp.

Favorite looks:

Lily-Rose Depp in Chanel was one of my favorite looks of the night. I loved the nods to early 2000s Paris Hilton and the pink. I honestly wasn’t expecting her to show up, so when I saw her I gasped. I absolutely loved the look and she rocked it. One thing about this look was the fact that I don’t know how to line it up with “American Independence.” Other than that, her outfit was amazing.

Barbie Ferreira looked amazing. The pearls and sparkles of her dress caught my eye so fast and I absolutely adored the dress. It was very extravagant, but also very simple and definitely gave a nod to 50s Hollywood. I honestly do not think anyone else could have pulled it off quite as she did.

Pete Davidson in a dress. Need I say more? I absolutely loved the look, especially for someone like Pete. As it was Pete’s Met Gala debut, I don’t think he could have done it in a better way. Pete is just the type of person to not think about things too much and kind of just do whatever which is why I think this was perfect for him. Seeing as men wearing dresses was such a hot topic the past year, this was such a Pete moment. He looked phenomenal and I was very impressed.

Kate Hudson in Michael Kors was also one of my favorite looks of the night. The light pink and t fur coat were everything. Her Lorraine Schwartz jewelry was also a serve. Like Barbie Ferreira’s look, this look was very simple, but also very extravagant. A monochrome look is exactly what I love, even though it had a huge fur coat along with it. It all pulled together nicely.

Last for my favorite looks but certainly not least, Kendall Jenner in Givenchy. This look was such a Kendall look which a lot of people didn’t like but honestly, could anyone else pull it off? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Again, very simple but very extravagant. A nude, sheer dress with gems all over it? Complete serve. I loved it and I cannot believe some people didn’t.

Least favorite looks:

Olivia Rodrigo’s Met Gala debut was not exactly a serve. I honestly kind of hated it. I feel like she could have done so much better but instead, she came in a sheer, black catsuit with feathers on it. Not exactly my vibe or her’s honestly. It was just very plain. Why show up to the Met Gala if you’re going to wear a monochrome black outfit?

I did not like Lil Nas X’s outfit. It was too extravagant for me and I do not understand how it aligned with the theme. Honestly, outfit changes are literally just asking for attention at the Met Gala. The 2019 Met Gala was “Camp” and outfit changes made sense but not for the theme of “American Independence.”

Megan Rapinoe was a little too on the theme for me. She was about the only one that actually followed the theme of “American Independence” and let’s just say, she stood out like a sore thumb. She looked like she just walked out of Party City on the fifth of July after having their “75% off American decorations and accessories” sale. I was just not impressed.

Ok, first of all, why was Addison Rae even invited? Honestly, in my opinion, the only influencer invited should have been Emma Chamberlain and Addison Rae’s look did not help this case. Her dress looked like it could have been bought on a fast fashion website, not designed by Tom Ford. We can all have our opinions on influencers but I honestly think Addison should not have been invited and especially have shown up in that.

The last and most horrendous look in my opinion was Kim Petras in Collina Strada. She said it was an ode to the horse girls of America but really, I think it was just ugly. Why is she literally wearing a horse? And what is with the ugly pattern of the actual dress? I don’t know but I really just hated everything about this look.
