BSM celebrates a socially distant homecoming week
October 2, 2020
With coronavirus concerns not permitting a usual homecoming, BSM administered changes that allowed for social distancing to take place along with the celebration of Homecoming Week.
Instead of the usual Homecoming Dance that BSM puts on every year, Homecoming Week was celebrated through a theme-filled spirit week and class specific activities.
Throughout the week, students could participate in dress-up days that included a jersey day, a class color day, and a BSM spirit day. These days went along with class days outside of the school day on BSM’s turf, where students could play numerous games with their own grade.
BSM senior Lucio Fialo, who attended the senior class day described it as being a great time with his class with many options of activities. “We had various games going on like spike ball, volleyball, wiffle ball, and my personal favorite, soccer, where we played [the game] world cup,” Fialo said.
For the senior day, the class of 2021 showed up in great proportions with a majority of students in attendance on the Friday students had off school. Fialo estimates that over 95% of all seniors attended.
With senior students split amongst two cohorts, many students got to see friends and fellow classmates they hadn’t seen since March of the previous school year. “It gave me a feeling of normalcy with the entire grade all together as a class, and it was an overall amazing experience and activity to be a part of,” Fialo said.
BSM continued with the traditional coronation of the Homecoming King and Queen as usual; however, instead of hosting it inside BSM’s Great Hall, it took place socially distanced on the turf. While a usual homecoming coronation would be in front of the whole school, BSM’s student council found it more convenient to host it at the Senior Day, so the class could enjoy their final homecoming celebration.
At the coronation, seniors Lucio Fialo and Lauren Hawkinson were honored as BSM’s Homecoming King and Queen, along with class representatives from every other grade in the Senior High.
Though it was a new setting for the coronation, Fialo said it was just as special an event to share with his class, and being honored was a great experience. “It was obviously an odd Homecoming Coronation, but we made it work. I felt a massive sense of joy because for Homecoming King the entire school votes for the position and to have that sort of an impact on the school makes me feel a great sense of pride,” Fialo said.
Senior Nick Marinaro, a member of BSM’s student council who was tasked with planning these Homecoming events in this unique climate, was proud of how the coronation shaped out. “For the strange circumstances surrounding this year’s Homecoming Coronation and week, I feel like Homecoming turned out the best that it could,” Marinaro said.
