Business and Law should be a required class
April 2, 2020
Back in 9th grade, Business and Personal Law was definitely among my favorite classes. The class probably isn’t for everyone, but nonetheless, it should be required. The class certainly taught me a lot about the law. However, to be clear, the class is way more focused on law than it is business. That is a common misconception among students going into the class.
I think that all students should be required to take Business and Personal Law as a mandatory class. The main reason for my wanting business and personal law to become a required class is that it provides a basis for future learning about law and grants a basic understanding of it. The class provides a lot of practical knowledge for later in life, especially if you chose to pursue some sort of law degree in college. It’s always a good idea to have a basic perception of the law, and I learned many things that I had not known about the law in the class.
The class presents information about our government and judicial system in a digestible manner, and the tests aren’t crushingly difficult. While law may not interest everyone, it is one of the most important things you can learn about in school. Law is the basis of our society, and understanding it is incredibly important. Some people who might not think they are interested in the subject may find that they actually like it.
Going to school is all about attaining the skills necessary to succeed later in life, and having a good understanding of the law is most definitely one of those skills. While there are units on it in Social Studies and history classes, they only provide an incredibly rudimentary knowledge of the law and usually focus on the government and systems behind it. Business and Personal Law provides advanced knowledge of the systems and has value later in life.
