BSM volleyball hopes to turn strong season into a State appearance
The team has a 14-3 record and looks to continue these winning ways.
Coming off of the 2016-17 season with a 22-9 record and a tough loss in the Section semi-finals, the BSM volleyball team is already shaping up to have another great year. With senior captains Anna Carr, Sophie Hathaway, Rachel Folkestad, and junior Anna Shurson, they hope to lead the team to success. Already, they are 14-3.
Over the summer the team went to several camps including one at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. They also trained with Coach Creer everyday during the last week of August. The practice schedule during the season is two and a half hour practices everyday after school. These long days have helped the team get to where they are now. “We’ve done better than every other season,” Anna Carr said.
Some of that success is due to adding several underclassmen on the roster to replace those who graduated. “We lost two [seniors] that played big roles. They brought a lot of energy and leadership,” senior captain Sophie Hathaway said. Freshman Skya Favor and eighth grader Carter Booth have been added to the varsity roster and both captains agreed that they are playing well. “They are both doing a great job as starters and they add a lot to our team,” Carr said.
Although the team has a tough schedule, they have a strong winning record. “We are a small school compared to the large schools, but I think we will play well against our conference,” Hathaway said. Coming back from a loss against Bloomington Jefferson last year in the Section Tournament, the team hopes to make it to State this year. “We have improved a lot the past two years and we have a lot of expectations this year,” Hathaway said.
Already having a good start to the season, the seniors want their last year to be special. “I feel like this is the year that we can actually do something. We have improved a lot over the past three years, and this year is our big year——everyone is watching us. Big things are coming,” Carr said.
