The girls’ basketball team took on the Holy Family Fire on Saturday, March 3 in the section semifinals, losing by a score of 53-55. Although the team stayed within 5 points for most of the first half, they ended the second half down by 12, 25-37.
The Red Knights started the second half slowly, only managing to cut 4 points from the Fire lead in the first 8 minutes. The team rallied in the final minute, as they cut a 5 point lead down to 3. Freshman guard Allie Coughlin tied the game at 53 with only a few seconds left, and the Fire scrambled to score a basket to avoid overtime. The Fire made an and-1 bucket with .1 of a second on the clock, missing the free throw but preventing the Red Knights from making a comeback.
Senior guard Josie Dillon and senior forward Khadijah Shumpert combined for 36 points on the night, but it was not enough to overcome the Fire as only 4 points were scored from the Red Knights’ bench. The Fire’s Hannah Schonhardt scored a game high 19 points, as well as the final basket, contributing to the Red Knights’ loss and advancing to the section finals.
