Along with the Triple “A” Award, the MSHSL and Minnesota’s Private Colleges sponsor the ExCEL award– standing for Excellence in Community, Education, and Leadership. Juniors John Karlen and Maddie Jobe were nominated for the award designed for students active in fine arts and/or athletic activities who show leadership and are model citizens in their community.
Known prominently for being a captain and MVP goalie of the girls’ varsity soccer team, Maddie Jobe has helped bring her team to the state tournament multiple times as well as earning All-Conference, All-State, and All-Tournament.
Along with soccer, Jobe participates in varsity hockey (also making a trip to state), lacrosse, National Honor Society, Knightlife, church volunteering, and student council. “It’s great to get acknowledged for my accomplishments, and out of so many kids in the school, it’s an honor,” Jobe said.
John Karlen is a three-sport athlete as well, playing soccer, basketball, and track. Along with being a Math League captain, Karlen participates in peer tutoring and Red Carpet Club. “It’s great to be nominated for an award that encompasses all three main areas of student life,” said Karlen. In addition, he coaches youth basketball and is a member of his church’s choir.
ExCEL winners will be recognized on KSTC-TV during the 2009 girls’ and boys’ hockey and basketball tournaments.
