Sweet, innocent, and yet seemingly grown-up could describe rising country star Taylor Swift’s new album Fearless. This is Swift’s second album release after her self-titled debut album in 2006.
The lyrics of Fearless are more mature, but there is still a simple feel of comfort and understanding that many artists who try to appear more grown-up lack. Out of the thirteen songs on the album, Swift personally wrote six of the lyrics, and helped in writing the rest, which helps the words to come across as more personal, and from the heart.
The sound of the album is also very simple, and calming. The blend of guitar, violin, subtle piano and her girl next door voice are perfect as she centers almost all of her songs around the theme of love. This helps the album to have the feel of pop to it, but still is genuine country.
The songs in this album are easy to relate to, just like her past album. For example, in her song ‘Breathe,’ she easily tells the story of a break-up, and how hard it is to get over, by saying how she can’t breathe without you. This song connects to ‘Teardrops On My Guitar,’ one of her most popular songs from her self titled album, because of the emotions she invokes in getting over someone through her soft voice and proper wording.
The overall feel of the album Fearless is comparable to that of pop sensation Colbie Cailat’s album Coco, only in a country attitude because of the themes that it deals with. In Swift’s song ‘Fearless,’ she captures what it feels like to be in love for the first time, much like Cailat’s song ‘Bubbly’ that talks about the feelings of love also.
The popular song, ‘Love Story,’ makes an appearance in this album, and the words are beautifully crafted as she sings about Romeo and Juliet, but yet how it relates to young people today. It is a feel good song, and she does an excellent job of capturing the love of the song without being to cheesy or overly dramatic.
Through this album, Taylor Swift is easily on her way to becoming one of country’s biggest stars. Fearless greatly helps Taylor Swift to mature, while keeping her original sound, and the album is well on the way to becoming one of the top albums this year. This album is a must for all teenage and young adult women, with the down-to-earth lyrics and the simplicity that the album possess.
