Boys’ golf has won their first three conference meets and have set high goals come sections and state where success is highly likely.
This year the boys’ varsity team, made up of seniors Niklas Almstrom, John Brooks, Jeffrey Jopling, Nick Jung, Tom Juntunen, junior Patrick Cron, and freshman Brett Draxler, has lots of experience playing together. “Our team’s depth is probably our best quality because everyone on the team can shoot low numbers,” said senior John Brooks.”
“We’re pretty old with five of us being seniors,” said Nicklas Almstrom of the team, “it’s a fun team and we get along well.”
Team camaraderie and hard work most likely account for the team’s success already in their conference, and with common goals, the team is sure to keep their winning streak going. “We’d like to win the conference championship and advance from sections to state, possibly taking a state title,” said Almstrom.
“Our biggest competitor in the conference is Totino Grace—they’ve gotten second in every meet so far,” said Brooks. Totino is always good, but this year the Red Knights are not letting up. “This year is different because instead of playing just one team at a time, now all ten of the conference teams are at the matches and all play each other,” said Brooks. Other competitors of the team include Edina and Minnetonka.
The rest of their season should prove to be exciting as the talent on this team is exceptional. With seasoned players, common goals, and determination, they will certainly rise to the challenge of sections and state. “This year we should be good enough to get to state; we’re good enough to win sections and maybe even win state,” said Brooks.
