Love Story is a new show that came out on Hulu this February, and episodes came out weekly at midnight on Thursdays for this first season. The episodes follow Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr. throughout their relationship, from their first meeting to eventually dying in a plane crash. This show explores many ideas about both JFK Jr. ‘s and Carolyn’s lives, and the struggles they were speculated to be going through.
I was very engaged at first when John and Carolyn were first introduced and started to date. The drama was high because Carolyn was unsure if she wanted to be serious with John due to how relevant he was in society and the press at the time. However, there was not much time between when they got engaged and their wedding. There should have been more episodes focusing on them leading up to getting married because it seemed very rushed.
I wish they didn’t focus heavily on the Kennedy family in the first couple of episodes. Although I understand that John, along with Carolyn’s family, was very relevant in their love story, it seemed to be the parts I wanted to skip the most. The show focused on John’s mother before she passed away and his sister Caroline Kennedy and her husband Edwin Schlossberg. These story lines felt very repetitive due to the same fights about the media and John’s priorities being his only focus. Carolyn Bessette’s sister, Lauren Bessette, on the other hand, had a more interesting storyline. She would remind Carolyn, for example, that when Carolyn often argued that John wasn’t putting enough time and thought into the relationship, she never actively asked to talk about it. These comments by Lauren are what most watchers were thinking. Along with that, her having a part in the show is necessary due to her death with Carolyn and John.
Overall, I thought this show was very entertaining. It was very popular on social media. At first, people loved the beginning of the show and were inspired by Carolyn’s fashion. There were popular TikToks about her outfits and hair, along with her repeated lip bite. Many girls were also very interested in Carolyn’s messy hair and how she carried herself with such confidence throughout the show, especially at the end, despite the media. She seems to have been very iconic and relevant at the time, and her legacy is coming into the light.
I know many people stopped watching the show mid-season, as it started to get repetitive and predictable. It is confirmed that the next season will not be about JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, but instead will be about a new famous couple. There are many predictions that season two will star Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, a notable couple of the 1960s. I am excited to see what the next season will look like, and I would recommend this show to anyone who is looking for a relaxed show you can watch on and off.
