This year, Benilde-St. Margaret’s welcomes a new counselor, Micah Wimmer. Wimmer is the college counselor for last names Mi-Sa and is excited to get to know everyone. He attended undergraduate studies at Bethel University in St. Paul, where he studied psychological sciences and biblical and theological studies. He later attended grad school at Mankato State, studying Counseling and Student Personnel. Before coming to BSM, he worked at United South Central in Wells, Minnesota. He wanted to work in a Christian school, as he grew up in a religious environment in Sioux Falls.
Growing up, Wimmer says he has wanted to be a counselor since 8th grade. He wanted to be able to help people at a very critical transition point in their lives. Wimmer plans to help students by being a support person. “I want to be a constant presence for them that they can just go to, whether it is academic, college, or personal,” Wimmer said.
Within the past two weeks, seniors have had meetings with their counselors to talk about their plans for college. These meetings have consisted of confirming a college list and taking action to start college applications. Many students have given positive feedback on Wimmer. “He is a great guy [and I can tell] he’s really passionate about his job,” Max Rasmussen said.
Something you may not know about Wimmer is that he is a Coca-Cola collector. He has collected hundreds of Coca-Cola memorabilia, from stuffed animals to trucks and tins; he has it all. His all-time favorite memorabilia to collect is Sprite Boy. If you don’t know who Sprite Boy is, he is the original Coca-Cola mascot. context. He has pink, rosy cheeks and is slightly “[…] creepy, but anything Sprite Boy related is my favorite,” said Wimmer.
Wimmer has many unique hobbies other than collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia.“ [I] watch planes, and then … guess where they’re coming from and where they’re going, and [my friend and I] just find them on the flight tracker,” Wimmer said.
“BSM is super excited about [Wimmer]. He’s got such a great attitude…and is doing a great job [at] figuring things out…he’s excited about our students and meeting with parents,” said BSM college counselor Ms. Wessman.
Wimmer brings help and a friendly face to students who are struggling with college, schedule changes, and anything else that students need help or assistance with.
