The Summer I Turned Pretty is one of the most popular shows currently trending on Prime Video, and its third and final season has just wrapped up. The series, based on Jenny Han’s beloved novel series, has been a fan favorite since its debut in June 2022. It captures the ups and downs that come with first loves, friendships, and family, all in the beloved setting of Cousins Beach. As a loyal fan of the books, I felt that the season truly delivered by resolving the love triangle and giving fans the closure they have been looking for since episode one.
The season opened with viewers finally getting to see the deeper aspect of Belly and Jeremiah’s relationship at college, where it felt more mature and fresh compared to their relationship seen at Cousins. Then all of a sudden, Belly found out that Jeremiah had cheated on her whilst on spring break in Cabo, greatly damaging their relationship. I thought that the scene did an excellent job of staying true to the book, and the song choice (playing “You’re Losing Me” by Taylor Swift as Belly ran off in anger) was a perfect choice to add an extra layer of intensity and make the viewers feel all of the emotions running through Belly amidst the situation.
One of the biggest plot twists and moments throughout the entirety of the season was Jeremiah’s proposal to Belly. He promised to stay true to Belly and make up for his mistake of cheating on her by loving her eternally, which was followed by Belly’s yes, and the two of them embraced. My overall reaction to this scene was utter confusion because the two were just in a huge fight and were so young that it just didn’t make sense to me. Also, not to mention, Jeremiah first asked Belly to marry him outside of a hospital, where Belly’s brother was critically injured. Later, Jeremiah proposed to her in his fraternity house with the smallest ring I have ever seen. I felt as if Jeremiah was only proposing to convince Belly to forgive him for cheating. While the scene was very dramatic, the proposal felt more impulsive than sincere, which left me questioning Jeremiah’s true intentions for Belly.
Just as everything seemed set in motion with the wedding, Conrad, Jeremiah’s brother in the series, confessed his love for Belly on the beach the night before the wedding, which ultimately led to a feud where the wedding was soon called off. This set up for Belly to take off to Paris in the hopes of starting a new life and distancing herself from both Conrad and Jeremiah. I honestly really loved the story arc of Belly’s time spent finding herself in Paris, and I felt it was really necessary for her character. She was previously so focused on Cousins and balancing her love life with Jeremiah, all while keeping Conrad in the back of her mind. I felt that Belly shied away from who she truly was, especially when she was with the boys.
The final episode of the series is truly the climax. Conrad surprised Belly in Paris, and the two of them spent the day together while realizing they both still, and always will, love each other. After a lot of hesitation about starting a life with Conrad, Belly ended up running to catch his train to Brussels, and the two of them embraced in a meaningful kiss. The series ended with Belly and Conrad holding hands in the backyard of Cousins overlooking the ocean. I felt like Han did an incredible job wrapping up the series with this ending. It showcased a beautiful love story between Belly and Conrad while highlighting how much the two of them have matured during their time apart. Their reunion didn’t feel rushed but rather both sincere and emotional. As a fan, I couldn’t have asked for a better fitting ending to this iconic series, and I can’t wait for the upcoming movie that is in the works!
