With the fall weather approaching, Halloween is near and Benilde-St. Margaret’s students are excited to make plans for a fun holiday. Halloween can be a fun-filled holiday of spooky decorations, Halloween parties, costume competitions, trick-or- treating, haunted houses, and much more. Many students look forward to picking fun and creative costumes and celebrating the holiday with their friends. With most high school students moving away from trick-or-treating as it is mostly an activity for younger kids, many look to make other fun plans to celebrate the holiday.
Benilde-St. Margaret’s football coach, Sean McMenomy, has young kids and plans on going trick-or-treating with them. In the past, he has dressed up as Sebastian the crab from the movie The Little Mermaid. Every year they wear a costume as a family, and McMenomy’s wife chooses the costume and surprises the family. Along with the family costume, they also enjoy having some family bonding time over the holiday evening. “We always dress up as a family and then go around the neighborhood trick or treating. Then, we have a bonfire afterwards and have a fun time,” McMenomy said.
Unlike McMenomy, junior Addie Morris would rather attend a Halloween party then go trick or treating. Another festivity Morris enjoys is going to Screamtown, a haunted festival, with a group of friends. Morris likes to dress up and go to Halloween parties over the Halloween weekend. This year, Morris plans on dressing up as a construction worker. In the past, the best costume in her opinion that she has worn was Hannah Montana.
Senior Brooklyn Miller dresses up and goes trick-or-treating every year. Her favorite costume she has worn in the past was Vector from the movie Despicable Me. Miller also loves getting the most candy possible on Halloween night. Her costume this year is a work in progress, but she also plans on attending a Halloween party. “I always go trick or treating, [and] get as many candy bars as I can fill up my pillowcase,” Miller said.
Another favorite Halloween festivity is watching scary movies, which senior Kaeli Koopman is a big fan of. She considers watching scary movies to be her favorite part of the holiday. Koopman also dresses up every year and her favorite costume she’s worn was a Monster High doll. This year, she plans on doing a duo costume of Princess Peach and Mario with her boyfriend and hanging out with her friends on Halloween weekend.
