Morly

2014 was a big year for contemporary female R&B artists; FKA Twigs and Banks both shared space on the charts and achieved critical acclaim. Morly’s 2015 debut EP “In Defense of My Muse” is clearly influenced by those artists’ records with its basic features consisting of minimal instrumentation, spotlessly clean production, and intricately layered vocals.

But while “Defense of My Muse” channels contemporary R&B, it contrasts those characteristics and sounds, at times, very similar to Bjork-style experimental Electro-Pop. Morly got her start in Gayngs, a Minnesota indie super-group composed of well-known local artists such as Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, Dessa of Hip-Hop group, Doomtree, and Har Mar Superstar, which likely exposed her to an eclectic musical background which reflects her unique sonic palette.
