Wellness succeeds in relieving stressed minds

February 15, 2012

Chloe Kennedy, Staff Writer

Deep within the basement hallways of BSM, room 27 houses an aura of centering and relaxation as students sprawl across the floor on mats and blankets during their Wellness meditation class. As an hour of release from stress and providing strict concentration on the health of body, mind, and spirit, Wellness classes have proved to be a revolutionary addition to the BSM curriculum. When Ms. Connie Fourre began her work as Wellness Director two years ago and started BSM’s Wellness program, she never imagined it would turn into the success it is today. “[The program is] better than what I originally envisioned. I never thought there would be all these activities, no BSM hour for a break,” said... Continue Reading

February 21, 2012

Matt Muenzberg, Sports Editor

After outscoring their opponents 96-6 in conference play this season, BSM will be leaving the North Suburban Conference for boys’ hockey and will play an independent schedule instead. A proposal by the NSC members was approved by coaches Sunday, Feb. 19. The Red Knights won three games by at least 15 goals, and opponents never came within four goals,... Continue Reading

Bright Rwagatare’s life changing move

February 21, 2012

Laura Shannon, Staff Writer

Life in Rwanda Freshman Bright Rwagatare’s life completely turned upside down after coming from a school where 60 children slept in one room, food was often cold and rarely tasted good, and teachers used severe discipline techniques to Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Even bigger than the change in schools, though, is Bright’s change in countries: from... Continue Reading

The Phantom Menace returns in 3D

February 15, 2012

Anna Landis, Staff Writer

“A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” Finally, for all the Star Wars geeks out there, George Lucas has deepened the meaning of life and also, the depth perception of his masterpieces, and given us what we have only dreamed of. (Dramatic pause) Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 3D. The storyline may still lack anything a film-maker would deem decent, yet Lucas has not left his young Padawans discontent. By updating the visuals of this film to 3D, it was much easier to watch and enjoy. The scenes that were especially enhanced were the Jedis’ journey to and from the underwater Gungan city of Otoh Gunga (sea monsters included), Anakin’s podrace with an excess of spectacular... Continue Reading

SOPA brings political awareness to teens

February 14, 2012

Let’s be honest: Teenagers don’t care about politics because tax cuts, social security, and immigration laws don’t affect their lives yet. An act like SOPA, however, sent teens into a frenzy. “How will I copy Wikipedia to do my APUSH homework?” “How will I download music?” and “How will... Read more »

Jack, we promise to keep you in our hearts

January 24, 2012

Dear Jack, Your accident caused an eruption of support around the state, country, and even the world. Famous hockey players, newscasters and musicians have reached out to show you support. Schools around the country wore white in your honor, “#Jabs” trended nationally on Twitter, and aggression in... Read more »

Schedule makes Christmas break stressful

December 15, 2011

While the annual Christmas-related excitement among students grows in the month of December, the most prominent source of our anticipation stems from the promise of a well-earned, relaxing winter break. But with this year’s school schedule and Christmas Day falling on a weekend, our winter break no... Read more »

Too much work creates bad habits for students

November 28, 2011

We go to school for six and a half hours every day and still manage to do four to six hours of homework each night, essentially doubling the time we spend focusing on education. Yet somehow, when that quiz day comes, we still have no clue what we’re looking at. The reason for this problem resides in... Read more »

Thankful for BSM hour, but looking for more

November 11, 2011

With homework, studying, and extracurriculars piling up for most students, a free hour would be the ideal element in a hectic schedule. Unfortunately for most students, especially those who wish to gain as many class credits as possible in their high school career, the highly coveted free hour is not... Read more »

Online alter egos create potential for bullying

October 13, 2011

Teenagers regard social media––namely Facebook and Twitter––as the greatest invention our generation has ever known. Although we see it as a source of daily gossip, it defines the progress of the communication methods of our time. Communicating through technology is convenient, yet the progressing... Read more »

Schools should add current events to curriculum

September 22, 2011

As the tenth anniversary of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 approached, we watched anniversary specials and dramatic media coverage purely depicting the emotional aspect of the 9/11 attacks. Although it is important for us to respect the lives lost and to reflect together on this tragic event, it is equally... Read more »

Reflections on bin Laden’s death and our generation

May 13, 2011

It’s hard for people our age to remember a time before September 11. Sure, maybe we remember 1st grade and “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood,” but an American culture while the Twin Towers still stood eludes memory for most of us. We struggle to remember a time before “Either you are with us, or... Read more »

Cultural understanding understated at BSM

staff
March 18, 2011

From an institutional perspective, it is clear that Benilde-St. Margaret’s values diversity. Unfortunately, student attitudes don’t reflect this. Too often students joke that black students are here on basketball scholarships, see PRO as an excuse to get out of class, and meet Father Ray East’s... Read more »

Union cut is a step in the wrong direction

February 28, 2011

Wisconsin, like every other state in the union, is broke. And, like every other state in the union, it’s looking at cutting services. As per usual, things like health and education are taking a hit in the budget; but, Wisconsin is gaining some national notoriety thanks to Republican governor, Scott... Read more »
