Religion teacher to enter seminary at University of Notre Dame

June 6, 2013

Mary Pat Ross, Staff Writer

After much thought and consideration, religion teacher Joe Pedersen has announced his decision to enter the seminary. Pedersen will depart for Notre Dame Seminary next fall. Entering the seminary is not something Pedersen has always planned on doing. “During college I was introduced to a lot of great priests, and they showed me how good and happy that life can be. I have been thinking about it since then, but through my prayer and discernment I have come to believe that I need to explore that possibility now,” Pedersen said. As of right now, he has not made a definite decision to enter the priesthood. Pedersen hopes to discern God’s plan for him. “I wouldn’t go to the... Continue Reading

Amidst scandal, IRS needs to re-consider non-profit qualifications

June 4, 2013

Molly Eldvick, Staff Writer

This past May, the IRS came clean about their thorough scrutiny towards the Tea Party and affiliated conservative groups. Speculation surrounding this scandal has developed since prior to the 2012 election, raising suspicions as to who was to blame for the inquiries. However, in manipulating this IRS scandal into a conspiracy theory centered on President Obama we have lost focus of the true issue at hand: organizations unrelated to social welfare that are receiving tax-exempt status. Let me start by saying that it is the IRS’ responsibility to remain politically neutral; they did something illegal and must face due consequences. Their actions alone warrant public scrutiny, but the substance... Continue Reading

Senior pursues passion for making and producing music

June 6, 2013

Laura Lyon, Staff Writer

Senior Thomas Gorrilla's strong passion for music make him place a great importance on it in his life. Gorilla is involved in creating music in a workspace that he created himself. He used his closet to set up a “recording studio”, per say, in which he writes, raps, sings, and creates his own beats. Gorilla began his musical pursuit during his sophomore year, when he created a music video as a joke. After his friend commented on how impressive it turned out to be, he was inspired to begin playing around with GarageBand on his Mac computer, creating remixes of songs. “It’s a good way to get emotions out,” Gorilla said. Although Gorilla has a strong passion for music, he is a dedicated... Continue Reading

The documentary,... Read more »

There's nothing remotely intriguing about a movie dealing with a box. Except, executed here, a lot of things. Director Richard Kelly brings us down a path of twists and turns that wind around logic and give it a good old chock-hold. "The Box" could have played close to formula with the fairly simplistic... Read more »

Charles Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol" is an old time favorite book, which has been created into an exciting, stylized animation movie. "A Christmas Carol" exerts the long life of choosing between happiness or sadness. Director Robert Zemeckis opens this dark and creepy film with the miserable... Read more »

Extravagant disaster movie + Mayan predictions = “2012″

When the first teaser for "2012" came out more than a year ago, I, for some reason, thought it wouldn't be the most over-the-top and ridiculously bad disaster movie I'd ever seen. But it is. For those concerned, the world is not, in fact, in danger of ending from mutant neutrinos emitted by solar... Read more »

"Where the Wild Things Are" might not be a movie for children so much as a movie about childhood. It's not the yucks-a-plenty Disney drivel that children have come to know and love, but it is unrelentingly beautiful, well-made and well-acted (more than can be said for most kids' movies and plenty of... Read more »

One of the scariest films of the year, “Paranormal Activity”

"Paranormal Activity" is one of the scariest films I have ever seen, as generic as that may sound. When a horror movie succeeds at truly shocking-and-awing that's when you know you've got a keeper. "Paranormal Activity" is a keeper. After Hitchcock's "Psycho" I never wanted to take a shower with supervision... Read more »

Instead of playing a game of tag football, there's a new form of recreational "fun" everyone can partake in; it's just a matter of whether you have the stomach. Also, a key requirement is some sort of weapon, a blunt object or semi-automatic rifle would do the trick. The object of the activity: killing... Read more »

If anything can top Ellen Page's performance as an impregnated sassy-pants in "Juno," it's "Whip It," another memorable Ellen Page characterization of a sassy teen, but this time, with a passion for roller-derby. Directed by first-timer Drew Barrymore, "Whip It" opens as Bliss Cavender (Ellen Page)... Read more »

Standing up after, "It Might Get Loud" I noticed that the fan base at the theater was as eclectic as the musicians who had just graced the screen. There were the leather-clad hardcore Led Zeppelin fans, the wanna-be hipster White Stripes fans, and the eggheaded, flatlining U2 fans. The whole audience... Read more »
