Student council elections plagued with rumors of cheating

May 22, 2013

Hannah Scherer, Staff Writer

Although Student Council elections have publicly remained without cheating in the past, rumors sprung up during last week’s class board elections that there may have been voting problems, or cheating, with SurveyMonkey when students voted on who would be Executive Board officers for the 2013-2014 school year. Despite the elections for executive board, junior class board, and sophomore class board being done over the online feature Surveymonkey, senior class board was later chosen by paper ballot, with the rising seniors, personally checking off their choices for president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary. “Ms. O'Keefe wanted to do it the paper ballot way to personally oversee... Continue Reading

New gun control measures need to ensure a safer society

May 20, 2013

Sarah Karels and Molly Eldevik

Following the horrific violence seen at Sandy Hook elementary, a shooting that killed 20 children and six educators, support for gun control measures soared. Up to 60 percent of the country supported revising gun control laws, and up to 90 percent supported universal background checks. However, five months and several shootings later, support has waned substantially. Politico stated that now only 49% of the public supports new laws. Why is it that after our country experiences tragedies such as these we only keep our attention to reform in the immediate wake? According to Mother Jones, “25 mass shootings have occurred since 2006, and seven of them took place in 2012.” In fact, the... Continue Reading

With the wide range of art and English classes offered at Benilde-St. Margaret’s, such as creative writing, digital photography, and painting, many students create brilliant pieces of art and writing that aren’t always recognized. However, Apotheosis makes it possible for skillful students to exhibit their work in the annual BSM literary arts magazine.... Continue Reading

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is a bill running through Congress in an attempt to curb the illegal uploading and downloading of copyrighted information and programs. Unfortunately, due to extremely vague wording and unclear definitions, the censorship proposed could extend to websites such as Facebook,... Read more »

I used to hang out at McDonald's. On Friday nights, when there’s absolutely nothing to do, why not go get some chicken nuggets and chill at the McLounge? I’m young, my metabolism is high, and it was too easy to just ignore the greasy, catsup-covered, animal I was eating. However, this summer, some... Read more »

Without a doubt, Benilde-St. Margaret’s lives up to its reputation as one of the best college prep schools in Minnesota, if not... Read more »

Focus of school Mass lost

With the entire Roman Catholic Missal being revamped, now is the time for us to give BSM’s Mass a slight face-lift. The most troubling portion of the Mass is the substantial emphasis on the Common Basket, and in turn, the upstaging of the Eucharist, which is meant to be the focal point of the Mass. Of... Read more »

The news shows the Occupy movement as a violent, unorganized rabble of people with no clear goal, so, while visiting Capitol Hill in Seattle, I readied myself for an anarchic group of ultra-liberal government purists prepared to tear down our current system of government in order to replace it with a... Read more »

Each year of my childhood, my family took a trip to the local Fargo mall with my grandparents to visit Santa Claus and give him our wish lists for the upcoming holiday. Although there was a lot of talk among the students of the topics addressed by the speaker Dr. Michael Fowlin, the bullying seminar didn’t leave a lasting impact on the BSM community or promote any improvement for the future. This is due to a lack of follow-up in the classroom, the students’ inability... Read more »

When I was 15, society didn’t consider me responsible or mature enough to drive a car, see an R-rated movie, or be at Mall of America after 7 p.m, among other things. But apparently I could handle the responsibility of life guarding and all it entails, including knowing how to properly operate an AED... Read more »

All of us, at some point in our life, have pictured our wedding; we imagine the venue, the flowers, and even the guest list, but something is missing in our fairy tale imagination––a life partner. Weddings have become all about the grand event and less about the person we are going to be with for... Read more »

When I was a little girl, I wanted to be in beauty pageants—mostly because I wanted to be a princess. I loved the sparkly gowns and crowns and the thought of a distant prince charming. But as I grew up, I learned I was meant to do more with myself than smile and wave in parades. TLC’s “Toddlers... Read more »
