After over a year of waiting, the second season of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidthas finally been released. “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” is arguably the most hilarious Netflix original show, which premiered last March. The show, produced by the 30 Rock stars Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, was such a hit the first season that two more seasons were announced after the stellar reviews came rolling in.

The series revolves around Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper), a naïve young woman from Indiana who recently escaped a religious cult. When she was fourteen, Kimmy was kidnapped along with three other women and kept by Reverend Wayne (John Hamm) under the belief that she was avoiding the apocalypse. When she was released fifteen years later, she was a grown adult with the mind of a child.

In the first season, she decides to move to pursue her dreams to make it big in New York City. It is there where she meets Titus Andromodon (Tituss Burgess), a flamboyant aspiring actor, and Lillian Kaushtupper (Carol Kane), her landlady. It is after meeting these two that Kimmy is swept off the street and introduced to Jacqueline Voorhes (Jane Krakowski) the mother of the children she nannies.

Despite the relatively realistic circumstances, the show takes a light humorous tone accented with it’s bubbly background music.

This season, Lillian’s plot revolved around her attempting to keep their run down neighborhood just how it is. She even went as far as to chain herself to construction equipment in an attempt to halt development. Titus has somehow managed to keep his job and find a boyfriend. Conversely, Jacqueline got divorced and has now devoted her life to causes involving her Native American community, such as changing the name of the Washington Redskins.

The second season picks up with Kimmy dealing with her relationship with her GED classmate, Dong. After partially resolving her relationship with Dong, Kimmy starts dating a lieutenant who has PTSD from war and realizes that she needs therapy. After she is no longer needed at her nannying job due to Jacqueline’s divorce, Kimmy starts work as an Uber driver. It is here that she pick up a drunk Andrea Bayden (Tina Fey).

This season, many celebrities made guest appearances. Executive Producer and creator Tina Fey plays a bipolar psychiatrist who is put together by day, drunk by night. While she is drunk and being driven around by Kimmy, she helps Kimmy put her life together by way of informal therapy. Pitch Perfect star Anna Camp portrayed Deirdre Robespierre, the wife to one of New York’s wealthiest businessmen. Additionally, Kenan Thompson portrays Ronald, Lillian’s deceased husband.

Despite the relatively realistic circumstances, the show takes a light humorous tone accented with it’s bubbly background music. Amidst the drama of recovering from PTSD from living in a bunker for 15 years, there are pop culture references including the whip, Taylor Swift, and Nickelodeon. This season, the show developed dry comedic style of “30 Rock” while keeping its own humor which revolves around Kimmy her friends being 15 years behind the times. Overall, I give this season of Kimmy Schmidt a 9/10. The only thing preventing a perfect score was the lack of an overly dramatic cliffhanger that keeps Netflix users coming back.
