Student council elections plagued with rumors of cheating

May 22, 2013

Hannah Scherer, Staff Writer

Although Student Council elections have publicly remained without cheating in the past, rumors sprung up during last week’s class board elections that there may have been voting problems, or cheating, with SurveyMonkey when students voted on who would be Executive Board officers for the 2013-2014 school year. Despite the elections for executive board, junior class board, and sophomore class board being done over the online feature Surveymonkey, senior class board was later chosen by paper ballot, with the rising seniors, personally checking off their choices for president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary. “Ms. O'Keefe wanted to do it the paper ballot way to personally oversee... Continue Reading

New gun control measures need to ensure a safer society

May 20, 2013

Molly Eldevik and Sarah Karels

Following the horrific violence seen at Sandy Hook elementary, a shooting that killed 20 children and six educators, support for gun control measures soared. Up to 60 percent of the country supported revising gun control laws, and up to 90 percent supported universal background checks. However, five months and several shootings later, support has waned substantially. Politico stated that now only 49% of the public supports new laws. Why is it that after our country experiences tragedies such as these we only keep our attention to reform in the immediate wake? According to Mother Jones, “25 mass shootings have occurred since 2006, and seven of them took place in 2012.” In fact, the... Continue Reading

The empty hallways, the silence echoing throughout the school, the parking lot empty of cars. This is the feeling that spreads throughout Benilde-St. Margaret’s the day after the seniors leave. The whole community suddenly becomes quieter while students miss their senior friends. It is always sad coming... Read more »

I am taking a test, and my pencil lead suddenly breaks. In frustration, I look around the room to realize there is only one pencil sharpener. Of course it is not electric, but I quietly get up to attempt to sharpen my pencil. I start to turn the knob as it makes a extremely noisy sound, and I watch the... Read more »

When you are craving some cold dessert, places like Yogurt Lab and Freeziac are great choices. On top of that, frozen yogurt is healthier than actual ice cream, but frozen yogurt shops allow you to build your own dessert that will satisfy your cravings. Sample cups allow customers to taste test any of... Read more »

Rant: Importance of the ACT

The ACT test puts way too much pressure on students. It is not fair that college admission is based off of a timed standardized test. Some people do not do well on standardized test, and others panic when they are timed and not able to think through problems completely. Grades over four years should... Read more »

There is nothing more frustrating than trying to make a messy bun. Rant: Students can’t switch teachers

Students should be able to switch at least one teacher at the beginning of each new semester. Both are legitimate reasons for switching teachers and this option... Read more »
