Religion teacher to enter seminary at University of Notre Dame

June 6, 2013

Mary Pat Ross, Staff Writer

After much thought and consideration, religion teacher Joe Pedersen has announced his decision to enter the seminary. Pedersen will depart for Notre Dame Seminary next fall. Entering the seminary is not something Pedersen has always planned on doing. “During college I was introduced to a lot of great priests, and they showed me how good and happy that life can be. I have been thinking about it since then, but through my prayer and discernment I have come to believe that I need to explore that possibility now,” Pedersen said. As of right now, he has not made a definite decision to enter the priesthood. Pedersen hopes to discern God’s plan for him. “I wouldn’t go to the... Continue Reading

Amidst scandal, IRS needs to re-consider non-profit qualifications

June 4, 2013

Molly Eldvick, Staff Writer

This past May, the IRS came clean about their thorough scrutiny towards the Tea Party and affiliated conservative groups. Speculation surrounding this scandal has developed since prior to the 2012 election, raising suspicions as to who was to blame for the inquiries. However, in manipulating this IRS scandal into a conspiracy theory centered on President Obama we have lost focus of the true issue at hand: organizations unrelated to social welfare that are receiving tax-exempt status. Let me start by saying that it is the IRS’ responsibility to remain politically neutral; they did something illegal and must face due consequences. Their actions alone warrant public scrutiny, but the substance... Continue Reading

Senior pursues passion for making and producing music

June 6, 2013

Laura Lyon, Staff Writer

Senior Thomas Gorrilla's strong passion for music make him place a great importance on it in his life. Gorilla is involved in creating music in a workspace that he created himself. He used his closet to set up a “recording studio”, per say, in which he writes, raps, sings, and creates his own beats. Gorilla began his musical pursuit during his sophomore year, when he created a music video as a joke. After his friend commented on how impressive it turned out to be, he was inspired to begin playing around with GarageBand on his Mac computer, creating remixes of songs. “It’s a good way to get emotions out,” Gorilla said. Although Gorilla has a strong passion for music, he is a dedicated... Continue Reading

When asked what he wants to be remembered for, Nic Brinza replied, “being a nice kid.” And that, quite frankly, may just happen, as Brinza is known (or maybe unknown) for his enduring kindness, involvement, and curiosity. Brinza has fond memories of his last six years at Benilde-St. Margaret’s,... Read more »

My locker: unlocked

I squeezed my backpack through the thin frame of my locker, and when it finally popped through, it was followed by an inundation of papers and pens and a notebook and more junk than I thought could fit in a standard locker. I thought that it was time to clean out my locker. And by “clean out... Read more »

Most classes at Benilde-St. Margaret’s have more than 20 students. But for a few students––and one teacher––this is not an option, as this year’s AP French class has three students, far below the school average. This year AP French is made up of senior Elisabeth Krane, and juniors Nick... Read more »

I used to try to hide them. I wore special clothes to shield my secret shame from the world. I made sure that they were never seen––to hide my self from ridicule, from judgement. But recently, I have come to embrace my imperfections, and be open about my body. I have come to accept, and even––dare... Read more »

Tuesday morning before school, I traversed into the dungeon to collect my pretend child for the infamous egg project. “Brown or white?” the teacher formerly known as Ms. Walsh asked me. “Umm, what?” I replied. “For your egg, do you want a brown one or a white one?” Ms. No-longer-Walsh... Read more »

Every Friday in the theater, the Sun Salutatorians meet to practice yoga. So every Friday, the Sun Salutatorians meet to... salute the Sun, or something. But not do yoga. I... Read more »

The average Benilde-St. Margeret’s student may end up eating a sausage-and-cheese bagel, chicken balls, and beef tacos all in one day, but some students and teachers avoid these quintessential BSM foods for ethical or other reasons. Of these students and teachers, some made the decision to become... Read more »

Because of the new no backpack policy this year, there are no backpacks to be seen in the halls of Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Choosing a drink for breakfast can be difficult: Do I want an early-morning sugar rush from neon-blue Gatorade? Do I want stomach cancer from the fake sugars in Propel?
