Red Knights start season on a high note against the Mustangs

With a win under their belts against Holy Angels, the BSM girls’ soccer team came ready to play against the Breck Mustangs on Saturday, August 28. Scoring quickly, the Red Knights ultimately beat the Mustangs 8-0.

Although the team welcomes 10 new members to the roster this year, they look like a team who has played together for months. “[All the new players] definitely forced us to reroute things and focus more on learning how to play with each other in comparison to last season, but it’s been going really good,” said senior captain Emma Forschler.

Jordyn Burns started the game off with a goal in the first two minutes, which established the momentum for the duration of the game. Scoring six goals in the first half, the Red Knights sat at a comforting 6-0 during halftime. The only thing the girls struggled with was offsides, having five offside calls in the first half alone.

The second half had a much different feel to it as the intensity was cranked up by the Mustangs. The Red Knights hung on to their solid lead but both teams had multiple foul calls–five on BSM and three on Breck.

Junior goalkeeper, Mikayla Columbe, had to make only two saves the entire game with the team’s stellar defense due to the fact that two of the three defenders are four year varsity players and captains. “I was surprised that Breck did not give us a better game, they are usually one of the stronger teams in our section,” said Coach Scott Helen-Christy, “when we have played them in the past the result has usually been closer.”

The girls and coaches have high hopes for the rest of the season and hope the Breck game was a good display of what’s to come. “The main goal is to win state and be undefeated because of my four years on varsity, we haven’t gotten first yet,” said senior captain Alex Schissel.
