The summer movie season kicked off with a bang, as “Neighbors” solidified its position in the running for number one comedy of the year. It is a raunchy, wild film that appeals to a mature audience.

Writers Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien constructed a script packed with profanity, but it also included intelligent and flawed characters. Director Nicholas Stoller has excelled with these plotlines over the years in comedy flicks such as “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Get Him to the Greek,” and does not fail to meet expectations in “Neighbors.”

Adjusting to homeownership and parenthood, Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly Radner (Rose Byrne) learn their new neighbors are untamed college students from the fraternity Delta Psi Beta, led by Teddy (Zac Efron). They make efforts to come across as hip and cool neighbors, while continuing to work towards setting boundaries for the frat boys.

The Radners are welcomed into Delta Psi Beta’s world of sex, drugs, and alcohol, as Rogen and Efron team up for a stellar comedic performance. Bonding over drinking, dance-offs, and arguing over who the ultimate Batman is are only a few of the numerous situations they find themselves sharing one liners and colorful dance moves in.

With the fraternity unable to keep the noise down, tension stirs up between the two houses, as police are contacted and a war between Efron and Rogen is sparked. Their battle is packed with countless jokes and outlandish shenanigans, providing viewers with a case of constant laughter and possible rupture of the spleen.

Outside of the push-and-shove antics weaved throughout the film, Mac is struggling to rid of his youthful tendencies and commit to parenthood, while Teddy is desperately squeezing as many ragers and obnoxious pranks into his senior year of college as possible, with hopes of forestalling the future and becoming an adult. Their wars with themselves adds to the feud between their families making for an eventful plotline.

Movie lovers will not be disappointed as Seth Rogen, one of the funniest actors today, exemplifies why he is one of the best at what he does. Surprisingly, Zac Efron keeps up with his acting partner, shedding his Disney image and proving that he can compete with any comedic genius.
